Sahra Halgan – Waa Dardaaran

Sahra is an iconic artist from Somaliland, formerly the British protectorate of northern Somalia and since 1991 an independent country that remains unrecognized by the international community. Granddaughter of a singer and poet, she turned to singing and music as a teenager, in defiance of tribal and family conventions. Her first album, as a trio, was released in 2015. On this new record, with its genuine vintage sound, the piercing heat of Sahra's voice transcends unwavering grooves and hypnotic riffs. Aimed as much at the dance floor as at our consciousness, this newrepertoire includes original compositions, traditional pieces, and songs from the golden age of the Somali stage. "Waa Dardaaran" is the polite form of address used towards the powerful and venerable as a prelude to making any request.

On her second album, Somali singer and songwriter Sahra Halgan comes roaring out of the gate with a raggedly rocking small ensemble behind her and a voice that soars, warbles, and shouts. Those who love Ethiopian pop music will recognize some similarities here in the melodic shapes and the vocal techniques of Somali singing, but Halgan's is a unique style; it draws not only on sounds and inflections of her home region, notably the very popular qaarami song form, but also on elements of rhythm and blues ('Caaqil') and even British new wave (listen to that cheesy Farfisa organ on 'Talo'). This isn't 'fusion' music, though; it's organic and original and honestly eclectic while still providing a window on a musical culture too little known outside of Africa. Highly recommended to all libraries.

Sahra Halgan is een diva uit Somaliland, de staat die zich in 1991 afscheurde van het door burgeroorlog verscheurde Somalië, maar om de één of andere reden niet erkend wordt door de internationale gemeenschap. De bijnaam 'Halgan' ("de strijdster") hield de zangeres trouwens over aan haar moedige inzet tijdens de revolutie tegen dictator Siad Barre in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw, toen ze een tijd lang actief was als verpleegster en optrad om de revolutionaire troepen moed in te zingen. Sahra eindigt uiteindelijk, zoals zovele andere Somaliërs, als vluchteling in Europa, waar ze in 2010 samen met percussionist Aymeric Krol (BKO) en gitarist Maël Salètes (Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp) het Sahra Halgan Trio opricht, een samenwerking die resulteerde in 2015, verschenen in Faransiskiyo Somaliland. In 2013 besluit Halgan terug te keren naar haar geboorteplek Hargeisa, de hoofdstad van Somaliland om er een lang gekoesterde droom te verwezenlijken en zo bij te dragen aan de heropbouw van haar land: de oprichting van een plek gewijd aan muziek en poëzie genaamd Hiddo Dhawr ("houdt de cultuur in stand"). En nu is er deze Waa Dardaaran (een Somalische beleefdheidsformule om hooggeplaatsten en eerbiedwaardigheidsbekleders mee aan te spreken), opnieuw opgenomen met Aymeric en Mael, maar deze keer aangevuld met toetsenist Graham Mushnik en verschenen bij Buda Musique onder haar eigen naam.
In de tracklist een mix van nieuwe nummers (Alaah, Hiddo en Dardaaran), de Somalische traditional Durdur, en klassiekers uit de gouden periode van de Somalische muziek (opener Kiidhaba en Talo zijn een klassiekers van de Somalische zangeres Halima Khaliif Omar, beter bekend als Magool, Somalisch voor "bloem", Talo een hit van diva Kinsi Haji Aden, en Massalo en Desha Deshu werden oorspronkelijk opgenomen door Khadra Dahir). Op Waa Dardaaran bezingt Sahra vooral de verschillende facetten van de liefde (opener Kiidhaba, Talo, Durdur, Caaqil, Massalo), maar roept ze tegelijk politieke leiders op hun verantwoordelijkheden te nemen (titelnummer Dardaaran) of drukt ze in Hiddo haar dankbaarheid uit voor de gastvrijheid die Frankrijk haar als politiek vluchtelinge betoonde terwijl ze tegelijk haar liefde voor haar moederland bezingt. Opzwepende Somali-funk, waarin waarvan wij absoluut wel pap lusten!
