In de review van het album ‘The Diddley Daddy Sound, 28 Songs Influenced By Bo Diddley’ vermeldden we reeds dat artiesten die een enorme invloed hadden op collega’s niet dik gezaaid zijn. Bo Diddley was er één van, maar Johnny Cash mag ook die eer opstrijken. Was Diddley de schepper van de ‘Diddley Beat’, dan mag je Cash als de uitvinder van de ‘Boom Chicka Boom’ stijl bestempelen. Een stijl die ook uitvoerig aan bod kwam bij de ontwikkeling van de rockabilly. Zijn aparte ritmetechniek en vocale frasering inspireerden vele artiesten, wat meteen Cash’s invloeden op de populaire muziek weergeeft. Invloeden die duidelijk te horen zijn op de 33 tussen 1956 en 1963 ingeblikte coverversies en originele opnames. Drie opnames uit de Rhythm Bomb archieven zijn zelfs nu voor het eerst te beluisteren, namelijk twee van Rayburn Anthony en eentje van Jason Lee Wilson. Warren Smith mag, in onvervalste Cash stijl, de spits afbijten met ‘Black Jack David’, dat ook opgenomen werd in 1940 door The Carter Family en eerder nog door The Carlisle Brothers. Ook opvolger ‘Frankie’s Man Johnny’, hier in de versie van Johnny Sea, dateert reeds origineel van 1916 toen The Leighton Brothers het opnamen. Aansluitend komt Bill Mack later nog op de proppen met ‘Johnny’s Gal Frankie’. Sea komt trouwens later nogmaals aan bod met ‘It Won’t Be Easy To Forget’, nummer dat een ietwat speels karakter krijgt door de backing vocals. Wie ook vocaal emotioneel enorm dicht bij ‘the man in black’ aansluit is Sleepy LaBeef in ‘Home Of The Blues’. Ietsje meer country klinkt dan weer ‘Makin’ A Livin’ With My Guitar’ van Hal Smith and The Country Squires, inclusief een schitterende Tennessee Two gitaarsolo. Hoe de Cash sound echt dient te klinken, legt The Great Pretender, het alter-ego van Mitchell Torok, haarfijn aan zijn muzikanten uit in de intro van ‘Al Over Again, Again’. En de song blijft humoristisch wanneer er plots uit het niets een banjosolo opduikt. Heerlijk nummer! Eveneens subliem is ‘Lonesome River’, een originele song van Archie Poe. Niet de meest perfecte ‘boom chicka boom’, maar wel een indrukwekkende eigen variatie erop. Dicht aanleunend bij Johnny Cash is zeker Bobby Wayne, hier met ‘Big Train’. Geen wonder dat Columbia Records hem als plaatsvervanger voor Cash achter de hand hield, die nog met zijn drugverslaving worstelde. Een rustmoment komt er Red Kirk en zijn ‘It’s Nothing To Me’, een song uit 1957. Akoestisch kan de Cash sound ook perfect. Het bewijs levert Johnny Nelms met ‘Mr. Freight Train’.
Zeker het vermelden waard zijn ook Bobby Rowan met zijn versie van ‘So Doggone Lonesome’, Howard Crockett met een aparte versie van ‘I Got Stripes’ en Billy Walker met ‘I’ve Got Lovin’ On My Mind’. ‘I Got Stripes’ krijgt bovendien nog een Duitse versie als ‘Viel Zu Spaet’ van Jason Lee Wilson.
‘Nobody can sing Cash like Cash’ is een statement dat vaak geopperd wordt. Maar dat Johnny menig artiest aanzette tot het maken van knappe opnames, kan na beluistering van dit meesterlijk album zeker niet ontkend worden. Een aanrader!

Bo Diddley was one of them, but Johnny Cash can also take that credit. Was Diddley the creator of the Diddley Beat, you can credit Cash as the inventor of the Boom Chicka Boom style. A style that was also extensively discussed in the development of rockabilly. His distinct rhythm technique and vocal phrasing inspired many artists, immediately reflecting Cash's influences on popular music. Influences that can be clearly heard on these 33 tracks, which contain cover versions and original recordings between 1956 and 1963. Three recordings from the Rhythm Bomb archives can even now be heard for the first time, namely two by Rayburn Anthony and one by Jason Lee Wilson.
‘Nobody can sing Cash like Cash’ is a statement that is often made. But after listening to this masterful album it cannot be denied that Johnny inspired many artists to make great recordings. Recommended!
