1. AllMusic - Andrew Hamilton
... Lovin' Touch is 43 minutes of the vivacious, electrifying Peylia Young, a.k.a. Sugar Pie DeSanto. DeSanto was married a number of times so her surname changed frequently. She was actually more prolific as a songwriter than a singer. Broadcast Music Incorporated lists 93 compositions by Sugar Pie under various names: DeSanto, Young, Parham, etc. These 16 songs were recorded by Chess Records between 1959 and 1964, and are highly representative of Sugar Pie, who was overshadowed at Chess by the similar sounding Etta James. "Slip in Mules" and "Soulful Dress" are two tough party songs about sprucing up and going out for a night on the town; "Dress" was written by Maurice McCallister, who sang lead with the Radiants. "Baby It Ain't Right," "Jump in My Chest" and "Mama Didn't Raise No Fools" get right to the point, the rhythms on these jams are so funky they probably had to burn incense in the studio to sweeten the air. It's a shame more interest wasn't showed Sugar Pie. She had it all, looks, voice, writing skills, and was a superb entertainer. A highlight of her shows was the back flip she would perform on stage, something I hear she still does, and she has to be close to 60 years old now. DeSanto is still singing, recording, and killing them on stage.
