This LP from the British Harlequin label features a prolific recording group, the University Six, which even in its earliest days consisted of at least seven musicians. Best known among the sidemen is bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini; other key members include either the underrated Chelsea Quealey or Roy Johnston on trumpet, trombonist Abe Lincoln and Bobby Davis on clarinet, soprano and alto. The music is very much in the white jazz mainstream of the period, influenced by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings and to a lesser extent Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Trumbauer. Nothing all that unusual happens, but the recording quality is decent for the time; the few vocals (only three of the 16 selections have singers) are tolerable, and Rollini's chugging bass sax keeps the proceedings moving. Highlights include "Tiger Rag" (one of three alternate versions included; the master takes are on Volume One), "I Ain't Got Nobody," "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" and "Nobody But My Baby Is Getting My Love." Not essential, but 1920s collectors will enjoy this peppy music.
