Reviews:

1. AllMusic - Carl Hoyt
The Hsaing Waing orchestra is comprised of a large number of tuned drums, tuned gongs, oboe, cymbals, flute, xylophone, wood block, and singers. While compositionally similar to Javanese gamelan, the texture of the hsaing waing is much more variable, ranging from loud bursts of sound to delicate solo intervals - in addition, the instruments themselves are radically different in texture from one another. It's a simply stunning example of a relatively unknown, yet highly developed art music, which combines both the rigor of western classical tradition with the sonic playfulness of current experimental improvisational styles. Also included are solo pieces for some of the instruments.
