By the time Ace Moreland recorded his third album, I'm a Jealous Man, his Southern blues-rock had become a little bit staid and predictable. There still were good moments on the record, but there were no new twists on his horn-spiked contemporary blues. Moreland's problem is that he doesn't break tradition enough, preferring to stick with tried and tested. That can be good when he's digging out forgotten classics like B.B. King's "Sell My Monkey," but most of the original songs on the album are simply perfunctory and performed in a similar fashion. That may be enough for his cult, but they also may find it a little frustrating that he's stuck in a rut.
