1. AllMusic - Ron Wynn
The Venanda Lovely Boys were among South Africa's most popular vocal groups in the late '70s. They performed in the style known as Isicathamiya, which has similarities to the mbube approach, but also includes lots of unison passages and harmonies very similar to classic black and white American jubilee gospel. They also incorporate falsetto vocals and marvelous bass patterns. The 12 tracks on this CD are often riveting, and although none are longer than three minutes, the group's call-and-response patterns, leads, phrases, and progressions are so spectacular that it doesn't matter how quickly they're performed.
