Norman Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic tours remained a huge draw in Europe for a long time. This Moon CD includes a portion of a 1955 Berlin concert, kicking off with an improvised blues ("Jam Session") that features Bill Harris, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, and Flip Phillips taking crowd-pleasing choruses. Peterson's trio (with Ellis and Ray Brown, adding Louis Bellson) backs clarinetist Buddy DeFranco in a fiery "Now's the Time." A medley of ballads showcase Eldridge, Phillips, Harris, and Gillespie in turn, while the Oscar Peterson Trio wrap things up with a bluesy "Easy Does It" and a turbocharged interpretation of "Seven Come Eleven." Like most Moon bootlegs, the sound quality is inconsistent, often muffling the rhythm section on numbers by the larger ensemble, but the performances make up for the audio shortcomings.
