Born March 27th 1909, American jazz tenor saxophonist Benjamin Francis Webster was a native of Kansas City, Missouri. He first studied violin, then learned how to play blues on the piano from Pete Johnson, and received saxophone lessons from Budd Johnson. He played with Lester Young in the Young Family Band, recorded with Blanche Calloway and became a member of the Bennie Moten Orchestra with Count Basie, Hot Lips Page, and Walter Page. For the rest of the 1930s, he played in bands led by Willie Bryant, Benny Carter, Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Andy Kirk, and Teddy Wilson. Webster was a soloist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the 1940s, appearing on ‘Cotton Tail.S’ He considered Johnny Hodges, an alto saxophonist in the Ellington orchestra, a major influence on his playing.\nThis 4 CD set brings together eight original albums from Ben Webster, on which he collaborates with a host of other Jazz Greats. Featuring co\-led records made with the likes of Art Tatum, Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Peterson, Gerry Mulligan and Joe Zawinul, plus jazz all\-star albums on which a glossary of the finest musicians gathers, this collection is unique in its specifics. Ideal as both a starting point for those new to Webster’s work, and as a compilation more diverse in its content than the more traditional anthology, this selection is certain to delight fans new and old who continue to fly the flag for one of the greatest sax\-players to have ever produced a note.
