Various – Boss Black Rockers Vol. 3 – Rockin Shoes

Dear Cats and Kittens, dig this cool array of killer black Rock and Roll from the "Golden Age" of American music. So many similar projects were devoted through the years to white rock and rollers (even the most obscure and unknown) and very little to the people that not only "originated" this music and played it long before white musicians started to fool around with it. They also continued to play it when black Rhythm and Blues music was suddenly re-named "Rock and Roll" to appeal to a wider white audience in segregated America and became a multi-racial genre in the mid-1950s. Some tunes are pretty well-known but the vast majority are not. I'm pretty sure you have never heard a lot of the tracks included here - even if a lot of them were pretty popular in the 1950s among both black and white Rock and Roll fans. Most of the artists in this new collection were actually household names in the "Rock and Roll World" of the 50s and early 60s. I sure hope this new series of 10 complimentary volumes will finally set things straight. Dig it!

Ik vraag me toch af hoe ze het in godsnaam klaarspelen bij het KokoMojo label, om iedere keer opnieuw een serie samen te stellen die enorm boeiend is, waar geen plaats is voor minderwaardige nummers en die je bovendien steeds reikhalzend doet uitkijken naar de volgende release. Dit alles is zeker van toepassing op de ‘Boss Black Rockers’ reeks. Een reeks die 10 albums zal bevatten en waar we met ‘Rockin’ Shoes’ bij deel 3 zijn aanbeland. Ook nu weer heeft samensteller Little Victor Mac, aka The ‘Mojo’ Man weer een fraaie portie rock-‘n-roll  songs uit de ‘golden age of American music’ gedestilleerd. Met spitsafbijter Big Al Downings in 1960 uitgebracht ‘Yes I’m Loving You’ zitten we al dadelijk in die formidabele door Little Victor gecreëerde rock-‘n-roll mood. The Swallows sluiten hier naadloos bij aan met ‘Itchy Twitchy Feeling’, inclusief een verschroeiende saxsolo. Vanaf dan volgen energieke, formidabele en dansbare fifties rock-‘n-roll songs mekaar in razendsnel tempo op. Hoogtepunten benoemen is onmogelijk, want alle tracks verdienen het etiket ‘gandioos’. Luister maar eens naar ‘Boom Chica Boom’ van Kenny Esquire And The Starlites, rock-‘n-roll en doowop op een meesterlijke manier met elkaar vermengd. Veel nummers hoor je hier voor het eerst en achteraf kan je moeilijk begrijpen waarom ze destijds niet het grote publiek konden bereiken. Eentje die dat wel kon was Ray Sharpe, hier met het overbekende ‘Linda Lu’. Enorm opzwepend, inclusief een over enthousiast publiek is Etta James’ versie van Ray Charles’ ‘What I Say’. Voor een instrumentaaltje moet je wachten tot track nummer 25. Daar geven The Duals met ‘Stick Shift’ een fraai staaltje van een door gitaar gestuurde hot-rod song weg.
Kortom, rust wordt je niet gegund op dit album, maar als je zin hebt om compleet uit de bol te gaan en je dagelijkse rompslomp te bannen, dan is dit de uitgelezen schijf daarvoor.

I wonder how the hell they manage at the KokoMojo label, to put together series every time that are extremely fascinating, where there is no room for inferior songs and also makes you eagerly looking forward to the next release. All this certainly applies to the ‘Boss Black Rockers’ series. In short, you will not be given any peace of mind on this album, but if you want to go crazy and banish your daily hassle, this is the disc for you!
