In the early 1980s, The Catholic Girls were among the first of the all-female New Wave bands who were signed by major labels (in their case, MCA Records), which would include, on various labels, such girl groups as the Go-Go’s, Bananarama and the Bangles. But with a name like “The Catholic Girls,” several years before Madonna openly thumbed her nose at traditional morality and religion, they were viewed as possibly insulting “a religion”—maybe even being borderline blasphemous.
