Sleeve Notes:
Fifty-one years after her death, unreleased Judy Garland (1922-1969) recordings continue to appear regularly and stupefy us by their brilliance.
Back in the LP era, Decca Records, on their 1963 The Best Of Judy Garland accidently included a B take of “(Dear Mr. Gable) You Made Me Love You.” In 1976 and 1977, DRG Records, under the auspices of the late Hugh Fordin, released three LPs, Cut! Out Takes From Hollywood’s Greatest Musicals based on the Arthur Freed archive. In 1984 came Decca’s LP From The Decca Vaults, remastered by Steve Hoffman, on which all the tracks had never previously been issued, save one. Insofar as unissued Capitol Records’ recordings, in 1989 they released a CD of the 1956 Judy in which they premiered “I’m Old Fashioned,” an outtake.
In 1992 Decca released on CD Changing My Tune: The Best Of The Decca Years, Vol. 2, which included the never-before-heard “Falling In Love With Love,” which was an outtake, recorded in 1947, from Garland’s very last session at Decca. 1994 saw the release of the Decca 4 CD set, The Complete Decca Masters (plus), which contained many outtakes and alternates. 1994 also saw the release of the 5 Laser Disc MGM/UA Home Video box set, called The Golden Years At MGM, which included countless outtakes and alternates.
The 2006 6 CD set from Rhino Records, That’s Entertainment! The Ultimate Anthology Of MGM Musicals, included a complete “Bud’s Won’t Bud,” one of E.Y. Harburg and Harold Arlen’s greatest songs. From Frémeaux & Associés in 2008 came Classiques et inédits 1929-1956, which included numerous unreleased radio tracks. Finally, Jasmine Records’ 2018 I Can’t Give You Anything But Love contained the unreleased M-G-M track,  “Why Was I Born?”.
The landmark 2010 JSP Records’ Lost Tracks 1929-1959, a 4 CD 100-track set, included a staggering 55 new-to-CD tracks, most of which were from the radio; it included the long-lost 1935 Decca tests, which made headlines in The Wall Street Journal. In 2015, The Best of Lost Tracks included 3 unreleased radio tracks. The follow-up double CD Lost Tracks 2 1936-1967 from 2019 included 50 tracks of which 40 were new to CD. The 2020 The Best Of Lost Tracks 2 contains one unreleased track, “You Couldn’t Be Cuter,” a 1938 song by lyricist Dorothy Fields and composer Jerome Kern. In all, the Lost Tracks franchise has seen the release of 150 tracks, including 100 songs new-to-CD.
This steady flow of unreleased material is unprecedented. As we approach what would have been Garland’s 100th birthday in 2022, there will surely be more to come. The private collectors who have amassed these rare recordings must be thanked for their diligence and care of these fragile discs. So too must be thanked the myriad labels which have been willing to invest in Garland over the years.
As the success of the 2019 biopic, Rupert Goold’s Judy starring Renée Zellweger as Garland, attests, more and more folks, and not just the fans, are interested in this phenomenal artist of an earlier era. Judy Garland is timeless, and her artistry lives on. Her voice was unique. James Mason, in his eulogy at her funeral in 1969, stated that that voice could wring tears from hearts of stone. That voice can be heard in this current iteration of Lost Tracks in all its glory. All one has to do is listen…
