Various – Southern Bred Vol. 11 – Texas R&B Rockers – Pass The Gin

As always, the sequence of artists and styles sit comfortably side by side and this album focuses on Rhythm & Blues, Rock 'N' Roll and Doo-Wop music. The mixed variety of artists include group recordings from, The Downbeats, The Meadowlarks solo and with their featured vocalist Don Julian, Chavez and Chaney, Gene & Eunice and Gene Forrest as a soloist. The early sound of R&B is heard from, Goree Carter, Willie Johnson, Paul Monday and Hubert Robinson. The two showcased ladies are Little Esther who is vocally supported by Bobby Nunn and Mel and songbird Viviane Greene. Texas Bred artists who established a career on the West Coast are; Jesse Belvin, Ernie Fields, and Young Jesse. Band leader Chuck Higgins was not a Texas native; he is nevertheless the featured bandleader behind several Texas Bred vocalists. As with every album, there is more music to hear and enjoy and the vibrant music has a pleasing up-tempo feel throughout. This Koko Mojo album is compiled by well-known Dee Jay and face on the music scene Mark Armstrong, who has been Dee Jaying since his early teen years. Our albums have; stunning design, sleeve notes, 28 songs, mastered for the best possible sound available. The disc is housed in an attractively designed cardboard sleeve, specially constructed to avoid the use of plastic and be environmentally friendly. The album is great to play at home and perfect for Dee Jays who will find good dance-floor filling songs. Met ‘Pass The Gin’, inmiddels reeds het elfde volume in de ‘Southern Bred’ reeks, zetten we onze zoektocht naar Texaanse R & B Rockers verder. En er vallen weer heel wat bekende en minder bekende artiesten en hun songs te ontdekken. We worden al dadelijk getrakteerd op een stevige R & B rocksong door H.B. Barnum met ‘Don’t Cha Know’. Barnum maakte eind jaren ’50 deel uit van The Dootones. ‘Don’t Cha Know’ nam hij op in 1959. Een fraai staaltje rock-‘n-roll krijgen we van Cledus Harrison and Orchestra met ‘Rock And Roll In The Groove’, pure Little Ricard stijl. Blues- en harmonicaman Harmonica Slim is tweemaal te horen. Zijn fenomenale harmonicaprestaties kan je een eerste keer horen op ‘Drop Anchor’. Later komt hij nog eens aan bod met ‘You Better Believe It’. Een andere blues en rhythm & blues grootheid is Charles Brown. Hier is hij aanwezig met het swingende ‘It’s A Sin To Tell A Lie’. Een super getalenteerde saxofonist was zeker Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson. Zijn ‘Good Bread Alley’ zet dat talent op de voorgrond, al is hij ook vocaal enorm te genieten. Ook tweemaal aanwezig is Joe ‘Papoose’ Fritz, namelijk met ‘Real Fine Girl’, opgenomen in 1951 en het in 1954 ingeblikte swingend ‘Honey, Honey’ met Johnny Otis in de band. Een popcorn rocker is het in 1961 voor het Mercury label door Young Jessie opgenomen ‘Teacher Gimme Back’. Een brave gast was James Wayne zeker niet. Na een woordenwisseling met een motelmanager, keerde hij terug met een fles gasoline, die hij prompt leeggoot. Heel wat gedistingeerder klinkt hij in ‘Agreeable Woman’ en ‘Two Faced Man’. Een pracht van een instrumentale boogie komt er van saxofonist en klarinettist Little Willie Jackson met het in 1948 voor Modern opgenomen ‘Jackson’s Boogie’ dat tevens een knappe gitaar- en pianosolo bevat. Knap is ook de titeltrack van The Meadowlarks, dat in het middenstuk een sublieme soft jazz gitaarsolo laat horen. Een track die zeker tot de indrukwekkendste behoort is Barbara Lynn’s soulvolle versie van ‘Don’t Be Cruel’. Formidabel gedaan! Afsluiten doen we met een klassieke ondertoon. Het instrumentale ‘Nut Rocker’ van Jack B Nimble and The Quicks is namelijk gebaseerd op Tsjaikovski’s ‘Notenkraker Suite’. Het nummer is trouwens ook gekend in de versie van B. Bumble and The Stingers.
Buiten al dit fraais, verbergt volume 11 van de schitterende ‘Southern Bred’ serie nog een groot aantal juweeltjes. Zoals alle vorige volumes is ook nummer 11 een absolute aanrader.
 
With ‘Pass The Gin’, already the eleventh volume in the ‘Southern Bred’ series, we continue our search for Texan R&B Rockers. And there are a lot of famous and lesser known artists and their songs to discover. We are immediately treated to a heavy R & B rock song by H.B. Barnum with ‘Don't Cha Know’. Barnum was part of The Dootones in the late 1950's.
We close with a classic undertone. The instrumental ‘Nut Rocker’ of Jack B Nimble and The Quicks is based on Tchaikovsky's ‘Nutcracker Suite’. The song is also known in the version of B. Bumble and The Stingers.
Beyond all this beauty, volume 11 of the stunning ‘Southern Bred’ series hides a host of other gems. Like all previous volumes, number 11 is an absolute must.
