Jive-A-Rama Volume Three - Atomicat (ACCD068) continues the acclaimed series of albums, and the album brings into your life thirty carefully chosen titles for both everyday listening and with an additional emphasis to get couples onto the dance floor. The music is sourced from the golden years of 1953 through to 1962, from labels large and small, and showcases a wealth of musical talent. The album comprises; jumping rhythm & blues, New Orleans shakers, big-city doo-wop productions, and hot rock ‘n’ roll. The bonus recordings are two unissued Rhythm Bomb Record recordings from an artist who is unknown outside of Germany Barbara Portland, and former Sun recording artist Glen Honeycutt. The invitation to JIVE dance is made throughout the album.

Onlangs startte het Atomicat label met ‘Jungle-A-Rama’ een nieuwe serie op en binnenkort ziet er nog een nieuwe serie het daglicht, maar daarop is het nog even wachten. De reeds bestaande series zijn ook enorm geliefd en logisch is dan ook dat er daarin nieuwe volumes op de markt komen. Van ‘Bop-A-Rama’ en ‘Stroll-A-Rama’ kon je de reviews van het derde volume hier reeds lezen. Nu is het de beurt aan ‘Jive-A-Rama’. Traditiegetrouw bevat deze compilatie opnieuw 30, tussen 1953 en 1962 uitgebrachte nummers. Met ‘Just To Hold My Hand’ een knappe rhythm & blues uit 1955 van Paul Perryman zijn we vertrokken voor meer dan een uur stomende muziek. Vocale hoogstandjes volgen er met ‘Pleasin’ You Pleases Me’ van The Lincolns, niet te verwarren met het viertal met dezelfde naam uit East Harlem, New York. Uit Harlem kwamen wel The Laddins met ‘Did It’, die uit hetzelfde vaatje tapten als The Lincolns. Ook The Del Knights staan garant voor hemelse samenzang, zo ook in ‘Compensation’. Voor een dijk van een rock-‘n-roll zorgt even later Frankie Sal met ‘Fabulous Cure’. Al zal de song misschien beter gekend zijn in de Engelse versie van de op 27 jarige leeftijd overleden Dickie Pride. Voor heel wat artiesten uit de fifties beperkte hun muzikale carrière zich tot de opname van één nummer. Dat was ook van toepassing op King Victor. Zijn uit 1959 daterende ‘Boppin’ Bobbie Jean’ was meer dan waarschijnlijk zijn enige opname, maar wel een heerlijke rock-‘n-roller. De studio van Cosimo Matassa leverde heel wat toffe rockende New Orleans rhythm & blues op. Ook ‘Shimmies & The Shakes’ van The Dukes werd er ingeblikt, en wel in 1956. Voordat hij een solocarrière startte, maakte Tarheel Slim deel uit van diverse vocale groepen. Maar ook als songschrijver was hij actief. ‘Let’s Have A Ball’ was één van zijn creaties, dat hier uitgevoerd wordt The Wheels. Een artiest die als componist meerdere hits achter zijn naam mag schrijven, is Otis Blackwell. Zo vloeiden o.a. ‘All Shook Up’, ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ en ‘Great Balls Of Fire’ uit zijn pen. Maar ook zelf nam hij steengoede songs op, zoals ‘Handle With Care’. The Four Seasons werden wereldberoemd, maar daarvoor maakten de heren opnames onder de naam The Kokomos. Van hen hoor je het swingende ‘Mama’s Boy’. ‘Back-Up’ van Eddie Johnson en Edna McRaney is een rhythm & blues met wat jazzy invloeden. Die worden vertaald door het sublieme pianowerk. Een voorbeeld van een authentieke commerciële en misschien wat té cleane rocksong serveren The Cobra Brothers met ‘Everybody’s Looking’. Niettemin een prachtsong! The Cobra Brothers keren later nog terug als The Key Brothers met het rockende ‘Lulu’s Party’. Voor een net zo schitterende rocker kan je terecht bij Tee Tucker en ‘Rock And Roll Machine’. Waarom sommige nummers, ondanks het feit dat ze wel hit potentieel hadden, geen hits werden, is een raadsel. Dat geldt zeker voor ‘Nearly Loved’ van Barbara Portland.
Het behoeft geen verdere uitleg. Ook dit volume kan je samenvatten in drie woorden, namelijk NIET TE MISSEN!

The existing series are also very popular and it is therefore logical that new volumes are coming onto the market. You could already read the reviews of the third volumes of 'Bop-A-Rama' and 'Stroll-A-Rama' here. Now it's the turn to 'Jive-A-Rama'. True to tradition, this compilation again contains 30 songs released between 1953 and 1962. With 'Just To Hold My Hand' a beautiful rhythm & blues from 1955 by Paul Perryman we are ready for more than an hour of steamy music. Vocal delights, rocking rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll and rockabilly follow in a lightning fast way.
