1. All Music - Bruce Eder
The original vinyl version of this concert recording is one of the rarer releases in Maurice Williams' output, which makes the CD reissue from Night Train intrinsically welcome. And the 39-minute live album is a good representation of what concerts of this kind were like -- "Stay" is the only one of Williams' own hits represented on this set, which mostly consists of covers of then-current hits such as "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," "It's Not Unusual," "Something You Got," and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling," as well as rock & roll standards such as "Twist & Shout." The sound is surprisingly good for a show recorded live in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in 1965, when the art of concert recording was decidedly primitive -- it's a little flat in the recorded ambience itself, and there's been no touching up; the occasional wrong notes do stand out; the balances are a little off; and there are leakages every so often -- but overall, this is a decent testimony to the kinds of sets that Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs used to play. "Stay" gets the best performance of anything on the CD, but nothing else here will give offense, and the instrumental version of "Soldier Boy" has a beguiling innocence all its own, while "It's Not Unusual" and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" could have each been great singles for Williams and company, with the band really cooking from the former's opening bars, and Williams rising to the occasion as a singer on the latter.
