“ John Primer, the innovator of the “straightforward lump” style… “
John Primer’s “You Can Make It If You Try!” is opnieuw een blauwdruk van zijn “straightforward lump” stijl. Zijn covers van Stevie RV (2“My Little Sister”), Elmore James (8“Standing At The Crossroads”), van Hound Dog Taylor (4“Big Fat Woman”) en van Little Junior Parker (6“Don’t You Hear Me Calling For You”) zijn hier schoolvoorbeelden van deze energetische uptempo stijl. Dan is er ook de overweldigende Otis Rush’s cover 3”You Can Make It If You Try” van meer dan negen minuten, waarin Primer begint met vier ongelooflijke gitaarsolo’s, voor hij na een intro van bijna vier minuten en enkele keren “Do You Like The blues?” (“Yes, I do!”) aanvangt te zingen… Of verkies je toch de nog langere slow blues 7”If I Could Hold You In My Arms” van Muddy Waters??
Of m.a.w. “Chicago Blues at its best!”

BUENISIMO.

Real Chicago blues, the most original and best one performed with honesty and no cheating. Blues that flows from the deepest part of the heart and soul by great singer and guitar player John Primer. The band captures all the magic and spirit of Chicago West Side along the eleven songs that had been collected from different Magic Slim and The Teardrops shows. As good blues fans already know, John Primer used to open for Magic Slim, playing three or four songs with Nick Holt on bass and Earl Howell on drums. The album gathers these opening tunes, with eleven great blues like "Sweet Man" (Muddy Waters), "You Can Make It If You Try" (Otis Rush), "Big Fat Woman" (Hound Dog Taylor), "Things I Used To Do" (Guitar Slim) or even "My Little Sister" (Stevie Ray Vaughn). John Primer perfectly knows the blues scene, so he does an amazing performing getting the maximum benefit. If you do not believe me, here is the proof, an album to listen, enjoy and dance until you are totally exhausted. GREAT.
