*Solid Joint Venture
Having heard that Sam Mitchell sadly passed on last summer, I felt inspired to re-listen to the three CD's of his that are available. This cumulative dose reconfirmed to me his impressive breadth, expressiveness, and technical skill. He always acknowledged his debts to the pre-war blues masters, but never got stuck in any blues purism, always doing his own interpretations, as well as composing original material. On his two solo CD's he included electric rock, Hawaiin, pre-blues ditties as well acoustic blues. Two Long From Home differs from those two CD's in that it is just about all blues and Sam is mostly playing and singing with Homesick Mac (10 out of 12 cuts), an acoustic bluesman based in Sweden. They alternate on lead vocals and comp/lead guitars, meshing well together on these fresh arrangements of classic titles. Mac is an established performer and actually has the stronger singing voice - though Sam was certainly no vocal slouch - and Mac's fine playing here shows why Sam often performed with him. They seem nicely tuned in to each other, and these acoustic duets create an easy, relaxed feel. Sam's solo instrumental, `Thibodeaux', is a nice, lyrical add-on to the duet format. Just a couple of original songs from either of them would have really put the icing on the cake.
