On this disc, Barrelhouse Chuck and Kim Wilson continue building their strong musical bond with one another and show why they are the premier Chicago blues artists. Siempre he sido un loco enamorado del blues de Chicago, sobre todo cuando está interpretado con la pasión y el feeling que este estilo requiere y, en el caso de este disco, no podía ser de otra manera. “Driftin’ From Town To Town” es una joya, una obra maestra del blues de Chicago south side. Barrelhouse Chuck es hoy por hoy un representante genuino y distinguido de este estilo y uno de los últimos pianistas que todavía nos quedan con el magistral sonido honky tonk a lo Sunnyland Slim. Chuck ha realizado una obra redonda en todos los aspectos, por el repertorio escogido, por los músicos que intervienen, por el alma y el duende que se respira a lo largo del disco, por la intensidad con que todos los músicos acometen los temas... Este es un álbum honesto, serio y brillante, donde todo suena fluido, reposado, sobrio, cálido y natural. ¡Y qué podemos decir de Kim Wilson que no esté dicho ya!. Kim sopla la armónica con su peculiar estilo, tono y su sobrada técnica, lo hace todo tan fácil que es imposible sustraerse a su magia y duende. "Driftin' From Town To Town" is a precious jewel, a masterpiece of Chicago south side blues. Barrelhouse Chuck has now become a genuine distinguished representative of this style and one of the last living piano players that still and masterly have that honky tonk sound Sunnyland Slim used to have. Chuck has done a perfect album in every aspect: the chosen repertoire, the musicians involved, the soul and magic that can be felt throughout the whole recording, the intense passionate performing all musicians do in every song included… This is a honest, serious bright album, where everything sounds fluent, calm, temperated, warm and natural. And, what can we say about Kim Wilson that is not already said!  Kim blows harp with his amazing original style, tone, and overflowing technique, he makes it so easy that it is impossible to escape from his magic and charisma. The band is a true luxury "all-stars" one, with Barrelhouse Chuck piano and vocals, Kim Wilson harmonica and vocals, Larry Taylor bass and double bass, Richard Inness drums, Billy Flynn and Jeremy Johnson guitars and Sax Gordon tenor and baritone sax in five of the thirteen cd songs. Het collectief doorwinterde bluesmannen, zes man sterk, geeft met deze ‘Driftin’ From Town To Town’ een mooi staaltje authentieke Chicago blues ten beste waarin de piano van Barrelhouse Chuck en de harmonica van Kim Wilson een prominente rol spelen. Maar ook de gitaristen Billy Flynn en Jeremy Johnson, Larry Taylor op bas, Richard Innes op drums en saxofonist Sax Gordon als zesde bepalen mee de warme klankkleur van de Chicago bluesmuziek zoals deze door de ‘all-stars’ reünie met verve wordt ingekleurd. Het zijn allen rasmuzikanten die een veelzijdig palmares kunnen voorleggen. Barrelhouse Chuck, alias Charles Goering, weeskind dat in een adoptiegezin opgroeide, geraakte al vroeg in de ban van de muziek, vooral van de bluessound van Muddy Waters en het pianospel van Otis Spann die destijds met Muddy Waters meespeelde. Maar als pianist absorbeerde hij ook invloeden van zijn mentoren Sunnyland Slim, Blind John Davis en Pinetop Perkins. Een enkele keer doet hij zelfs aan Lafayette Leake denken.
De lijst van legendarische bluesmannen waarmee hij speelde is lang en hij zou dientengevolge urenlang anekdotes kunnen vertellen over allerlei eigenaardigheden van beroemdheden, zowel tijdgenoten als reeds overleden helden, zoals o.m. Little Brother Montgomery. Dat totaal opgaan in de bluesscène maakt dat hij zich met zijn pianospel eerder in dienst stelt van de groepsdynamiek dan zelf de voorhoede op te eisen, waardoor dit album heerlijk relaxt overkomt en complexloos aansluit bij de Chicago traditie. Ook het harmonicaspel van Kim Wilson, jarenlang toerend met de ‘Fabulous Thunderbirds, laat de broeierige sfeer van de Chicago bluesclubs herleven. Hij krijgt alle ruimte en neemt ook op een tweetal songs de zangpartij op zich, zoals op het rockende ‘Thirty Days’ van Chuck Berry met een erg geïnspireerde drummer. Wanneer Barrelhouse Chuck met veel feeling de covers van Floyd Jones vertolkt, o.m. ‘You Can’t Live Long’, of het inlevende ‘Anna Lee’ van Robert Nighthawk, begeleidt de harmonica hem als het ware meeschreiend. Tempowisselingen komen er met o.m. ‘Lucky Lou’ van Jody Williams.
Wanneer op de instrumentale nummers de tenor- of baritonsax van Sax Gordon invalt schakelt het groepje over naar meer energieke nummers, met als hoogtepunt ‘Three Hundred Pounds of Joy’ van de geweldige Willie Dixon. Het laatste ‘Time Is Tight’ met orgeltje doet aan de sixties denken, als een uitgeleidend nummer op het bal waarbij de laatste dansers nog even overleggen over de nacht die komt. Doorheen alle tracks volgt de barrelhouse piano zijn wisselende bedding, stemmig, energiek, bespiegelend of klaterend. En behalve de variaties in het pianospel kent Chuck de blues ook van binnenuit. Zijn echte ouders heeft hij nooit gekend, al zou hij half Cherokee zijn. Maar als je al op jonge leeftijd, amper twintig van Miami naar Chicago trekt, op zoek naar je blueshelden dan wordt rusteloze blues ‘Driftin’ From Town To Town’, -een eigen nummer-, je tweede natuur. Op 10 juli wordt Barrelhouse Chuck zesenvijftig en dus wordt het hoogtijd om deze pianist met zijn barrelhouse stijl eens op een Belgisch festival te programmeren. Hij zal zowel voor intieme momenten zorgen als voor energieke uitbundigheid.
