Balkun Brothers

Seduced by the pissed-off blues-rock of two nasty little brats from Connecticut, Popa Chubby decided to produce their first album and to hit the road with them. Saint Slide pray for us, time has come for the Balkun Brothers.
Balkun Brothers new self-titled album is a powerful blend of infectious grooves, hard-hitting guitars, monstrous drums, and deep rootsy blues soul. The band’s second full length studio album is a testament to the duo’s dedicated search for new and exciting sounds that push the boundaries of blues, funk, and rock n’ roll.
Balkun Brothers have teamed up with the king of New York City blues, Popa Chubby, who helped assist the band in the production of the album, as well as engineering and recording the 12-song outing.
With sonic influences from the earliest era of the delta masters to the most modern rock ‘n’ roll titans, the two brothers have conjured up a mighty musical mash that will have your head-bangin’, hips shakin’ and boots stompin’. The album showcases the firey slide guitar of older brother Steve and the funky, heavy-rockin’ rhythms of younger brother Nick.
The release will be followed by Balkun Brothers’s first European tour, as they will be supporting Popa Chubby.

De Balkun Brothers hebben in de herfst van 2015 de eer om heel wat concerten te openen voor Popa Chubby. Niet toevallig is Popa Chubby ook de producer van dit zelftitelend nieuwe schijfje. De broers Steve (zang, gitaar) en Nick ‘The Hammer’ Balkun (drums, zang) zijn afkomstig uit Hartford, CT. en samen met pianist Dave Keyes presenteren ze opnieuw een smeltkroes van blues en energieke rock beïnvloedde klanken. De Brothers richten de band op in 2010 en werden sindsdien jaarlijks genomineerd voor de Connecticut Music Awards. Na de debuut EP ‘God Bless Our Fallout Shelter’ maakte de band heel wat progressie, en na hun eerste succesvolle full-length album ‘ReDrova’ is er nu dus het nieuwe titelloze album. Hierop vinden wij opnieuw elf ijzersterke, originele nummers. Enkel de song ‘Mean Town Blues’ leenden ze bij de recent overleden Johnny Winter. Uiteraard voorzien de heren het nummer van eigentijdse, knappe en opwindende eigen rock-‘n- roll arrangementen. Net zoals in hun explosieve live shows evolueert het duo hier naar een van de beste bluesrock bands die we de laatste jaren mochten aanhoren. De sound varieert tussen blues, rock, funk en psychedelische muziek en eigenlijk alles daar tussenin. Steve strooit gretig met zijn gitaarriffs terwijl broer Nick zich de naden uit lijf werkt met zijn drumsticks. De Balkun Brothers zijn een fris geluid voor deze blueswereld. - Philip Verhaege (5)
