The deeply moving title track comes from a far more serious lyrical place, chronicling the plight of an earlier era’s itinerant bluesmen. “That one’s dear to my heart,” says Bashor. “They’re in this cotton field. So they take this cotton field full of dreams that’s in their head from working all day and trying to transcend that mentally and put themselves in another place, and they start thinking, ‘Man, I know a few chords on that guitar. Maybe I’d get lucky. Maybe I could go to Chicago and be a star.’”
“It’s a mixed bag,” says Michael. “People who are real blues purists are going to be scratching their heads. But it’s got some beautiful music—some pop and some blues and just all kinds. And there are some personal stories of Albert’s in it too.”

Wij hebben het wel voor songwriters die onderhuidse humor in hun teksten weten te verwerken. Wij hebben het zéér zeker voor artiesten die dat dan ook nog muzikaal passend weten in te kleden. Als dit plaatje dan nog klopt op alle songs die ze op hun release weergeven zijn we helemaal verloren. Om nu te stellen dat dit gegeven opgaat voor “Cotton Field Of Dreams” van Albert Bashor zou teveel uit de bocht gaan zijn. Maar in ieder geval werd hier een lovenswaardige poging gedaan.
De bluesgitarist , zanger en songwriter Bashor begon al op tienjarige leeftijd met het bespelen van de gitaar. Wat rock ‘n’ roll achtige zang pogingen erbij , al dan niet gesmaakte uitstapjes als drummer bij de meeste bizarre rockbands in de zeventiger jaren en uiteindelijk begin jaren negentig ontdekt door Michael Frank, grote baas van Earwig Records. Niet toevallig toen Albert het voorprogramma verzorgde van David “Honeyboy”Edwards, Michael was namelijk jarenlang manager en eigenlijk ook bezieler van die blueslegende.
Het debuut van Bashor voor Earwig wordt gekenmerkt door de grote diversiteit in de nummers. Er wordt afgetrapt met het funky, New Orleansblues getinte “Jukin’ Down On Johnson Street”, met alvast een heerlijke, veelbelovende gitaarsolo van Bashor in verweven. Daarna worden in de volgende tracks de oren muzikaal verwend met ondermeer fantastisch sax werk van Ron Holloway, heerlijk akoestisch snarenspel van Albert en vooral de, in positieve zin, lachwekkende teksten. Luister maar eens naar “Tater Diggin’ Woman” of vooral “Seeing Eye Dog Blues”. Het zal verdomd moeilijk zijn om je lach in te houden. Op de laatst genoemde track valt er trouwens ook prima harmonica werk te beluisteren van Michael Frank.
Muzikaal schipperen de songs wat tussen blues, jazz, folk, rootsrock en zelfs pure pop. Dit gegeven zal het moeilijk maken om een stevige achterban te vinden voor dit debuut. Er is voor elk wat wils maat stijlpuristen zullen wel struikelen over de diversiteit. Nochtans zitten er enkele pareltjes tussen die eigenlijk eenieder zouden moeten kunnen bekoren. “Rockin’ Red Rooster” bijvoorbeeld met oh zo indrukwekkend pianospel van Little Feat’s Bill Payne. Hoe goed kan een song ook rockend klinken zonder drums kan je je hierbij afvragen.
Het swingende “So Blue” met gesmaakte vocale tegenwerking van Shay Jones op Bashor’s zang en akoestisch werk zou toch ook ieders huiskamer moeten kunnen opfleuren. “Put Me On Like You”, met de dobro, weggelegd voor elke liefhebber van vooroorlogse blues staat dan misschien in schril contrast met “Fetch Me” en de zinderende gitaarlijnen van rocker Pat Travers, ze zijn beiden absoluut genietbaar. Je vindt op dit album ook nog een echte “storyteller”: het met wrange humor doorspekte “Poodle Ribs Story”. Of heb je liever een pure , radiovriendelijke song ? met “High On Your Love” word je op je wenken bediend.
“Lucky Man” sluit het album af. We kunnen er ons iets bij voorstellen. Het speelplezier druipt van de release af. Albert Bashor kan iets of moeten we zeggen kan veel . De songs werden allen door hem geschreven of mede geschreven. De man heeft bovendien een meer dan aangename stem en kan verdorie een stukje gitaar spelen. Ik hoop dat de toch wel enorm uiteenlopende stijlen op dit album geen struikelblok zullen zijn.

Although Albert Bashor’s Cotton Field of Dreams on Chicago’s Earwig Records may be his first release, he has been the music scene for quite some time. Earwig records was interested in signing him back in 1993, but as is quite common, the band broke up! But Bashor kept on writing and performing and one of his songs, “Rockin Red Rooster,” was recorded by none other than Lonnie Brooks in 1996.
So now in 2012, again thanks to Earwig Records, Albert Bashor has finally released this very eclectic collection of songs as a solo artist. Produced by Earwig’s Michael Frank and fellow Chicagoan Lynn Orman Weiss, this is a delightful collection of tunes with something for everybody. The CD covers blues, acoustic, and roots rock all really well.
As an interesting note on the production of this CD, what drums are to be found are provided by Chicagoan Willie “The Touch” Hayes, but the surprising thing is that they are used very sparingly and most cuts do not even have a drum track. With the quality of the songs, lyrics and arrangements, I found myself not missing them at all.
The CD opens with “Jukin’ Down on Johnson Street”, a fast paced rhythmic tune with Bashor’s slide guitar intertwined. The CD then moves smoothly into “Rockin’ Red Rooster” for more upbeat blues. On the next cut, Bashor displays his skills as a compelling storyteller for a fun tale about a beloved Florida hometown rib joint that becomes the victim of bad PR. He uses it to introduce the funky, mostly instrumental, track “Poodle Ribs.” All three songs will have you tapping your feet and dancing in your seat.
Things then slow down a bit for “Put Me On Like You Do”, “Tater Diggin Woman” and my personal favorite “So Blue”. On this track Albert’s guitar playing and voice are superbly accented by the addition of Shay Jones’ excellent duet vocals.
Shay Jones on vocals, Ron Holloway on sax and Bill Payne’s (Little Feat) keyboards really add a polish to the end results as they weave in and out of the CD. Well known ‘80s blues rocker guitarist Pat Travers takes “Fetch Me” to a place I’m sure nobody was expecting in pre-production. He was not initially part of the plan but just happened into the studio one day and joined in.The title track, “Cotton Field of Dreams,” is a moody assortment of layered guitars and sax with Bashor’s equally poignant vocals layered on top. This is definitely a composition worthy of being a title song. It’s sung from the point of view of a Delta bluesman who dreams of heading north to Chicago to seek a better life as a musician. The CD’s striking cover art reflects this theme.There is surely something for everybody on this release and it is a fine first effort for Bashor. And as far as this reviewer is concerned, next time I’m anywhere near Eustis, Florida I’ll be looking for Mr. King’s BBQ!

Albert Bashor’s muziek is een mengeling van Americana en Blues. Deze singer – songwriter heeft al een drukke carrière achter zich, hoewel dit zijn eerste solo cd is. Begonnen in de rock and roll als zanger als jonge man, waarna hij gedrumd heeft voor een zeer bizarre rockband in de jaren ’70. Na opnames als sideman van diverse blues-legendes, vindt hij de tijd rijp voor eigen werk. Alle 14 songs zijn van zijn hand. “Jukin’ Down On Johnson Road” is als het ware een tango, en “Rockin’ Red Rooster” is traditional blues alla Muddy Waters.  Een goede slide is er dan in “Put Me On Like You Do”. Hoogtepunt van de cd is de titelsong “Cotton Field Of Dream”. Het is eigenlijk een ode aan het ontstaan van de blues, en aan iedereen die het aandurfde om de katoenvelden vaarwel te zeggen en zijn geluk te wagen in Chicago. Al met al een leuke cd met de nodige afwisseling en zeer geslaagde zang - en gitaarpartijen.
