Description

Early hits from a unique musical style. Stars include Frank Ferera, Sol Hoopii, Kamsku & Kawaihae, Joe Keawe, Ray Kinney, Keaumoka Louis, Roy Smeck and Irene West.

Stars like Louis Armstrong made records backed by a Hawaiian guitar and numerous dance bands also exploited the sound. In compiling this collection we have generally avoided the more ‘Tin Pan Alley’ aspects of the music in favour of instrumental and vocal virtuosity and authenticity.

Considering the small size and remote location of the Hawaiian Islands the impact of their music across the globe is truly amazing; the icons of steel guitar – ukulele and grass-skirted hulan dancer have contributed to world entertainment since the beginnings of the Twentieth Century. As Hawaiian musicians travelled the world, first penetrating the USA, then conquering the rest of the American continent and Europe, bringing their gift into Australasia, Russia and Japan, they left behind a trail of home-grown disciples who ensured that Hawaiian music became a world-wide phenomenon and left its mark on many of the other forms of music that it rubbed up against.

On these four discs we attempt only a basic introduction to the formative fifty years of this fascinating multi-faceted music in the hope that it will inspire listeners to make further investigations of their own.

Reviews:

1. AllMusic - Stewart Mason
In the 1920s, a perfect storm of cultural changes -- the beginning of airline travel, the height of the tourist ship lines, the rise of a moneyed leisure class that could afford to take long vacations in exotic locales, and the increasing cheapness and portability of recording equipment, among others -- led to a brief passion for Hawaiian music in the United States. This was partially fed by Tin Pan Alley composers who exploited a brief vogue for Hawaiian-themed pop songs (modern-day ukulele chanteuse Janet Kleincovers several of these now-obscure tunes on her albums), but it also led to many recordings of Hawaiian musicians by mainland labels. It's those songs that are compiled on the marvelous four-disc box set It's Hotter in Hawaii. These are vintage jazz age sides, most of them similar to the Western swing that was popularized in the southwestern U.S. around the same time, only with that uniquely Hawaiian instrument the slack-key guitar standing in for the pedal steel. It's remarkable how similar the two instruments sound, actually; there are a few songs here that wouldn't sound at all out of place on a Bob Wills anthology, including, somewhat surprisingly, an entirely trad version of the blues-folk standard "Stack-o-Lee." Most of these 105 tracks are instrumentals, with the occasional vocal tracks evenly split between English and Hawaiian, and the remastering throughout is quite good, or at least as well as can be expected given the age and rarity of the source material. Only the near total lack of liner notes (unusual for a JSP release, which usually at least includes recording dates and musician names when available) keeps this from being the best possible introduction to Hawaiian music.
