Landslide Records is proud and excited to announce the compact disc release of RED CLAY SOUL, a vibrant new set of original, soulful compositions from veteran Georgia blues rocker Tinsley Ellis. A follow up to Ellis award winning, critically acclaimed TOUGH LOVE, the new album combines Ellis masterful guitar and vocal prowess with fresh arrangements and a crack backing band. Produced by Ellis and keyboardist Kevin McKendree, RED CLAY SOUL was recorded live in McKendree s Nashville studio with bassist Steve Mackey and drummer Lynn Williams. Oliver Wood (the Wood Brothers) contributed guitar and background vocal parts on the duet, Givin You Up, which he also co-wrote with Ellis. Additionally, RED CLAY SOUL boasts a wide ranging assortment of soul induced blues rock that opens with All I Think About, a Freddie King inspired rocker, then moves along effortlessly through the southern soul of Callin and the Latin based instrumental, Estero Noche. A hardworking road warrior known for relentless touring in the U.S. and abroad, Ellis is set for a worldwide slate of festival, theater and club bookings for the rest of the year.

Tinsley Ellis gives us an album filled with tracks that are reminiscent of the characteristic southern soul sound of many southern artists. Digging back to the roots of the soul sound of Ray Charles and Otis Redding and hailing from Georgia, Ellis’ title of his latest release makes perfect sense, Red Clay Soul.
There are plenty of mildly rocking tracks like “All I Think About Is You” and the song written with Oliver Wood of the Wood Brothers, “Givin’ You Up,” which is probably the track that is the most accessible to everyone. There just is not as much of the blues rocker that we are familiar with in his earlier albums like Fire It Up. There is still plenty to enjoy here, though, because Ellis does plenty of wonderfully expressive guitar work on some of the slower more emotionally deep tracks. The atmospheric slow blues of “Hungry Woman Blues” is an excellent example with the lines “you took my car and money too. I’m at the end of my rope … baby you took my rope, too” is just the type of lyrical mastery that his gritty voice is perfect for as he expresses the vulnerability of having his heart broken.
The rock output gets ramped up a little with “Don’t Cut It.” He really does some evocative string stretching as he channels a Latin vibe in the beautiful instrumental of “Estero Noche.” Meanwhile, the standout track of this album though is the closer “The Bottle, The Book, or The Gun.” Filled with some sparse picking in the solo his control of phrasing and melody are superb as he expresses the frustration of an alcoholic hitting bottom after waking up in an unknown place every morning after a bout with the bottle to ward off the loneliness of life on the road.
After 40 years as a musician touring the world, Tinsley pays tribute to the Southern soul sound and digs deep and delivers some superb emotionally cathartic tracks. The raw sound of being recorded live in the studio makes the mastery of Ellis’ guitar work all the more impressive.

De op 4 juni 1957 in Atlanta (Georgia) geboren Tinsley Ellis is al meer dan 40 jaar actief in de muziek. In die vier decennia heeft hij opgetreden in alle staten van de VS, Canada, Europa, Zuid Amerika en Australië. Hij heeft de podia gedeeld met o.a. Otis Rush, The Allman Brothers Band, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Willie Dixon, Son Seals, Koko Taylor, Albert Collins en Buddy Guy. In zijn jeugd luisterde hij veel naar The Yardbirds, The Animals, The Rolling Stones en Cream. Toen hij bij een concert van BB King was besloot hij bluesgitarist te worden. De eerste professionele band waar hij deel van uitmaakte was The Alley Cats en in 1981 formeerde hij The Heartfixers. Toen die band in 1988 uiteenviel tekende Tinsley Ellis een platencontract bij het befaamde Alligator Records. In 1988 verscheen zijn eerste soloalbum ‘Georgia Blue’. Na een aantal omzwervingen bij verschillende platenlabels richtte Ellis in 2013 zijn eigen label Heartfixer Music op.
Begin juni verscheen ‘Red Clay Soul’, het nieuwe album van Tinsley Ellis. Op dit album brengt Ellis een ode aan de muzikale traditie van Georgia, de staat waar de blues soul heeft volgens Ellis. Het geluid dat men daar red clay soul noemt, van de gospel van Ray Charles, de R&B van James Brown en Otis Redding, de rock ‘n‘ roll van Little Richard tot de bluesrock van The Allman Brothers.
De openingstrack All I Think About is een Freddie King achtige rocker met gitaarsolo’s en de piano en het orgel van de fabuleuze Kevin McKendree. Gitarist Oliver Wood (Wood Brothers en jaren geleden ook al eens lid van de band van Tinsley Ellis), schreef Givin’ You Up samen met Ellis al jaren geleden en verschijnt hier voor het eerst op plaat. Een prachtig Allman Brothers achtig nummer met orgel en piano, mondharmonica en leadzang van Wood. Callin’ is een Al Green achtige soulballad met BB King achtig gitaarwerk van Ellis en mooie bescheiden background vocals van Wendy Moten. Dat Ellis een uitstekende gitarist en een goede zanger is bewijst hij ook in Anything But You, een soulblues met weer dat heerlijke orgel van McKendree. De slowblues Hungry Woman Blues heeft ook weer heel mooi gitaarwerk en in de bluesstomper Circuit Rider neemt McKendree de gitaar ter hand. In dit nummer valt ook de uitstekende ritmesectie op. De uptempo rocker Don’t Cut It heeft een Southside Johnny achtig begin met weer fantastische gitaarsolo’s. Een heel mooi rustpunt op het album is Party Of One, een prachtige jazzy slowblues met ingetogen zang. Het tempo gaat weer omhoog in de Santana achtige latin instrumental Estero Noche. In het slotnummer vraagt Ellis zich af wat het beste is, de bijbel, de fles of het geweer. Maar los van het antwoord op deze vraag is de ballad The Bottle, The Book Or The Gun een prachtige afsluiter, met uitmuntende gitaarsolo’s over de golvende orgeltonen en een strakke ritmesectie.

Conclusie:
Met ‘Red Clay Soul’ heeft Tinsley Ellis weer een mooie parel toegevoegd aan zijn indrukwekkende oeuvre. Southern, soul en blues van de bovenste plank.
