Born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, Sue Foley hails from a music-loving, working-class family. For her thirteenth birthday, she received her first guitar. At sixteen she was gigging around Ottawa clubs, at eighteen she left home for Vancouver, British Columbia where she declared : “I’m gonna play as good as any man, and I ain’t gonna be no rhythm player.” By twenty-one, Foley was living in Austin, TX and recording for Antone’s - the esteemed blues label and historic nightclub that helped launch the career of Stevie Ray Vaughan -. Her first release, Young Girl Blues, quickly rooted her unique talents as a proficient blues guitarist, inspired songwriter and captivating vocalist. Foley has toured steadily with her band, since, armed with her pink paisley Fender Telecaster signature instrument. Three decades later she totalizes 15 albums oh her own and look part in 10 more as guest artist. The musicians she played with, sat in or opened for reads like a who’s who of contemporary blues, including BB King, Buddy Guy, Lucinda Williams, Tom Petty, Joe Cocker, Rufus Thomas, Johnny Winter, Lowell Fulson, Jimmie Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bill Doggett, Lester Bowie, Albert Collins, Earl King, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Van Morrison, Nina Simone, Duke Robillard, Lazy Lester, Keb’ Mo’, Hubert Sumlin, George Thorogood, Solomon Burke… As an offshoot to her professional recording and touring career, Foley returned to university to get her graduate’s degree and started a project called Guitar Woman based around dozens of interviews she conducted with the world’s leading female guitarists. From 20012015, she wrote articles, organized and promoted concerts, and worked on a book and a DVD bringing the work of great women guitar players such as Memphis Minnie, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Etta Baker and many others to light. For her return on the scene, she signed with Stony Plain Records (for North America) and Dixiefrog (for Europe). Her Mike Flanigin-produced label debut, “The Ice Queen”, will be released March 2nd. It was recorded in Austin where she made a real mark on the local scene when she lived there in the '90s and recorded for the Antone's label. Joining her as special guests was a trio of legendary Texas guitarists – Jimmie Vaughan, Z.Z. Top’s Billy Gibbons, and Charlie Sexton, along with other top Texan players such as Chris Layton. Around last Christmas, Foley, Gibbons, Vaughan, and Layton did two very successful gigs in their beloved Antone’s as part of the “Jungle Show”. Sue Foley is back on the saddle again, determined to “become the female Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown. I wanna be seventy-five, a wicked guitar player, and ornery as hell.”

We hebben er zes jaar op moeten wachten maar ze is weer terug!! Ik heb het dan over de roodharige blues furie Sue Foley. Haar laatste album was een duo album samen met Peter Karp maar nu bewijst zij met haar nieuwste soloalbum, dat zij nog steeds tot de top van de bluesrock behoort.
Op haar album wordt zij bijgestaan door muzikanten als Chris Layton (drums), George Rains (drums), Derek O’Brien (gitaar), Chris Maresh (bas), Billy Horton (bas) en de Texas Horns. En niet te vergeten de speciale gasten Jimmie Vaughan, Billy Gibbons en Charlie Sexton.
Die laatste is gelijk al te horen in het openingsnummer Come To Me. Een nummer, dat drijft op een funky Bo Diddley beat. Loom swingend met de zwoele stem van Sue in de hoofdrol en haar felle gitaarwerk. Sue bewijst dat zij nog steeds een beest van een gitariste is. 81 is een midtempo soulvolle blues met lekker orgelwerk en brandend gitaarwerk.
Run is een spetterende rocker met een groot rockabilly gevoel. Onbehouwen rockend in de beste Fabulous Thunderbirds en Paladins traditie. Met een spervuur aan snijdende riffs. Hoewel het The Ice Queen heet bewijst Sue met deze ballad juist het tegenovergestelde. Het is namelijk een zeer broeierig nummer met emotionele zang en prima priemend gitaarwerk. Dit nummer zal de meest koelere onder ons nog kunnen ontdooien. In The Lucky Ones is Jimmie Vaughan te gast als zanger en natuurlijk als gitarist. Deze feestelijk swingende shuffle heeft een hoog “Midnight Special” gehalte. Van de funky shuffe Gaslight heb ik weer wat opgestoken. “The man I love is giving me the gaslight”. Dat is dus volgens Sue weer een nieuwe manier om te zeggen dat je op een positieve manier jeuk van iemand krijgt. Ik kreeg in elk geval het “gaslight” van dit vrolijke nummer mede door Sue’s bijtende gitaar.
In Fool’s Gold pik je de ZZ bromstem van Billy Gibbons er gelijk uit. Samen met de felle zang van Sue vormt hij hier een lekker stel in een vette shuffle. De Texas Horns zorgen in If I Have Forsaken voor een weldadig, haast New Orleans-achtig, bigband geluid. Een heerlijk luie jazzy shuffle met zwoele zang van Sue.
Send Me To The ‘Lectric Chair is bekend van Bessie Smith (en diverse covers) en blijft een wrang nummer. Een vrolijke shuffle waarin de hoofdpersoon de rechter haast in een “joepie” stemming smeekt om haar naar de elektrische stoel te sturen. Een vreemd, rauw maar ook heerlijk nummer. Tot slot gaat Sue op de laatste drie nummers van het album over op de akoestische gitaar.
Death Of A Dream verraadt de Django Reinhardt invloeden van Sue in een zwoele nachtclub ballad en in The Dance onstaat een soort “Flamencoblues”waarin Sue als Spaanse peper aantreedt op de akoestische gitaar.
En hoe kan je het album nu beter afsluiten dan met de akoestische country blues van Cannonball Blues.
Goed dat ze weer terug is. Sue Foley heeft haar positie in de hoogste bluesrock regionen weer ingenomen.
