Rosedale – Long Way To Go

Rosedale is a rock and blues band formed in 2016 by singer Amandyn Roses and guitar player/songwriter Charlie Fabert, longtime guitarist of Fred Chapellier, but who also toured with Paul Cox, Janet Robin, Dave White.... Together they revisit American roots music with a fresh and interesting approach. Rosedale’s emotional mix of classic and modern influences paired with a devoted social media following has seen the band's popularity skyrocket in just a few months - their 2017 diary is filling up quickly, with bookings already announced on top festivals all over France. The band was promptly signed by Dixiefrog Records / Borderline Blues. Rosedale’s debut album, “Long Way To Go” will be launched during a celebratory concert at the legendary “New Morning” in Paris on the 22nd of May, with a European release on the 26th of May 2017.

CHARLIE FABERT : Charlie Fabert became a guitar addict when he was 13 years old after listening to Led Zep’s “Stairway to Heaven”. He exchanged all his toys against a 75 € unnamed Les Paul guitar copy and spent the following two years practicing the instrument 8 hours a day. The Charlie Fabert Blues Band was formed In 2005 and Charlie played with luminaries such as Joe Gooch (Ten Years After 2003-2014), Kate Cassidy, Aziz Sahmaoui (ex-Joe Zawinul Syndicate), Sally Strawberry and especially Paul Cox with whom he recorded the album “That’s What We Were Born For”. Later on, Charlie also collaborated with Roger Cotton (keyboards for Peter Green), Alan Glen (guitarist with The Yardbirds and Docteur Feelgood), Micky Moody (Whitesnake), Bobby Tench (singer with the Jeff Beck Group) and Bill Hurley (The Inmates). In 2012, he is selected to take part in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee with his friend the guitar wizard Fred Chapellier. Rosedale was born in 2016 and their first album “Long Way to Go” was mixed in Nashville by the Grammy nominated John Rausch.

AMANDYN ROSES : Amandyn Roses has been a musician since the tender age of 9, starting playing accordion and piano before switching to singing. During one year she followed classes at the Music Academy International in Nancy, France, a branch of the Berklee College Of Music. That’s where she met Charlie Fabert during a masterclass. Recently, Amandyn opened her own singing school in Altkirch (Alsace) where she teaches to more than a hundred students. Her main influences ? Beth Hart, Led Zeppelin, Etta James, Maggie Bell, Janis Joplin... It was perfect for Charlie !

Bluesrock uit Frankrijk….weinig mensen zullen gelijk een blij gezicht trekken want er zijn simpelweg niet veel bekende Franse blues(rock) namen, die tot onze verbeelding spreken. Daar zal dan met het duo Rosedale verandering in moeten komen. En die kans is heel groot want zangeres Amandyn Roses en gitarist Charlie Fabert leveren met ‘Long Way To Go’ een geweldig album af.
Charlie Fabert deed ervaring op bij artiesten als Joe Gooch (Ten Years After) en Paul Cox, met wie hij het album ‘That’s What We Were Born For’ maakte. Zangeres Amandyn Roses was nog helemaal blanco, wat ervaring met andere bands of artiesten betreft. Zij kan alleen maar teren op de invloeden van zangeressen als Beth Hart, Maggie Bell, Etta James en Janis Joplin. Niet bepaald zoetgevooisde stemmen!!
Het gebrek aan ervaring is totaal niet aan haar te horen want direct in het openingsnummer Bad News valt haar schuurpapier stem op. De song zou zo van Beth Hart geweest kunnen zijn. Stiekem viel ik ook wel voor de charmante “Allo Allo” -achtige Engelse uitspraak van Roses. Gitarist Fabert laat zich hier gelden met messcherpe solos maar ook door zijn soulvolle begeleiding.
Soul Possession heeft een funky New Orleans ritme met een heerlijk vet rollend orgel. De rocker Man, I Don’t Want You Around  heeft een duidelijke Southern Rock injectie gehad waardoor Lynyrd Skynyrd of the Black Crowes ineens erg dichtbij zijn. Fabert steelt wederom de show met zijn veelzijdige spel.
Qua titel staat I Will Never Let You Go in totaal contast met het voorgaande nummer. Dit keer gaat het om een smachtend gezongen soul ballad. Het gas gaat er weer op in de lekker pompende boogie Long Way To Go. Soepel swingend met priemende gitaar van Fabert.
When Evil Sets Its Sights On You is een dreigende shuffle, die een beetje weg heeft van Black Velvet van Alannah Myles. Ook qua zang komt Amandyn Roses in de buurt van deze helaas vergeten schoonheid. Pas in het zevende nummer van dit album, Before You, is het tijd voor een rustpunt. Een knisperende luie jazzy ballad met een zwoel zingende Roses en een ontspannen spelende Fabert.
Weer compleet opgeladen gaat het duo verder met de opzwepende rocker Lost Soul waarna het album wordt afgesloten door New Frontier, dat na een lang akoestisch intro door gaat als stomende rocker.
Als je weg bent van de samenwerking van Beth Hart en Joe Bonamassa, of gewoon van prima bluesrock,  zou ik hard hollend naar de platenzaak gaan en je knip trekken!
