Robert Pete Williams's story is the classic American blues myth incarnate: visionary talent, an incarceration in Angola prison, and ultimate salvation through song. Unfortunately, Williams's story also includes gutting it out on an unrepentant tour circuit later in his life, and not getting the rewards and celebrity from fans and the industry that his mercurial genius deserved. LOUISE: LIVE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA 1974 is a case study in the latter. Williams's haunting voice and uniquely spazzy riffs are in fine form throughout the 12 tracks included here, but the sparse turnout and poor fidelity suggest an artistry all too under-appreciated in its time. While not the best introduction to William's off-kilter approach to the blues, LOUISE is a great addition to the completist's collection.
