Rob Stone – Back Around Here

A live performance by The C-Notes can transport the listener back to the heyday of Chicago blues. Fronted by harmonica-playing vocalist Rob Stone, the group comprises four seasoned professionals with well over a half century of combined blues playing experience. They've paid their dues in the smoky Chicago blues joints and toured coast to coast across North America and Europe, as well as the Hawaiian islands and Japan, playing countless blues festivals, club dates and television appearances.
Separately, the members of the group have recorded for the Alligator, Evidence, Hightone, Ice House, Marquis, Appaloosa and Magnum blues labels, and received national recognition in countless blues publications. These musicians have performed with, and learned from, many of the greats, and toured extensively with the renowned drummer Sam Lay, “The Shuffle-master,” and with Jody Williams,  renowned Chicago guitarist.  Their mastery shows from the first note. They are all authentic showmen with pure ability to tear up a stage, as evidenced by their prominent role in the recent Martin Scorsese-produced "Godfathers and Sons" episode of The Blues series that aired recently on PBS stations nationwide.
As a vocalist Rob Stone is powerful, yet relaxed and natural; as a harmonica player he evokes the sounds of greats like Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and Walter Horton. The band members navigate their way effortlessly through one lean arrangement after another, from a soulful slow blues to a ferocious, driving slide guitar workout recalling past greats like Elmore James, Earl Hooker, and Muddy Waters, as well as all the blues harp legends from the heyday of Chicago Blues. Whether playing before an audience of seasoned blues fans, or a group of folks who've never been to a blues club, the energy and swing of their music pulls in the audience from the very first note.
The C-Notes play blues with love and respect for the tradition that lies at the heart of the music. The result is a genuine blues show unsurpassed in energy, feeling, and authenticity, presented with true professionalism and a touch of class.
With the release of Back Around Here in May of 2010, blues fans outside the Windy City, where Rob Stone plays at the House of Blues, will no longer be wondering about his current musical whereabouts. You won’t find anything downbeat on this new release: whether in the studio or onstage, this harp player maintains a high-energy attack. Rob’s rich, fat harmonica tone displays the stylistic sway of his mighty heroes - Little Walter, Big Walter Horton, the two Sonny Boys, and Junior Wells. Backing him on this new album are his longtime friends guitarist Chris James and bassist Patrick Rynn, who combined with Stone to write eight fresh originals, including the jumping title track, a houserocker driven by tight horns and James’ slashing axe. The three exhibit the same tight ensemble playing and unshakable commitment to Chicago blues tradition that defined their trio, The C-Notes. Guest artists include Sam Lay and Willie Hayes on drums, Rodney Brown on Sax, and David Maxwell on piano.

Seven years in between recordings, vocalist and harmonica player Rob Stone sure has all his ducks in a row with this first-class recording of blues straight from the heart of Chicago. As talented as anyone on the scene, Stone's trimmed and burning harp complements his soulful vocals, the Midwestern equivalent to an East Coaster like Darrell Nulisch, or collectively, Roomful of Blues. With instrumental help from the vaunted team of Chris James and Patrick Rynn, who also co-write the tunes, legendary drummers Sam Lay or Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Aaron Moore, and David Maxwell, Stone can do no wrong on this set of his originals and select urban blues classics. He's either typically old-school rockin', shufflin', or chooglin' along on these tunes steady as a freight train. Stone's personalized harp in the style of Little Walter rises to the top on the instrumental "Dragon Killers," digs into classic boogie during "Can't Turn Back the Clock," and even does a calypso thing for the autobiographical "Chicago All Night." Maxwell's timeless barrelhouse style is always welcome for any band to utilize, and he's doing it all-out, as "Sloppy Drunk Blues" is very similar to the Ray Charles evergreen "Mess Around." While some might find this child's play and simplistic for this excellent band, the deconstruction and reconstruction of standard Chi-Town blues heard here, with fine attention to detail, are precisely the elements that make Back Around Here a thoroughly enjoyable effort, far from garden variety, and one you'll want in your collection.

De in Boston geboren mondharmonicaspeler Rob Stone woonde op zijn achttiende een concert bij van Charlie Musselwhite en besloot de volgende dag om ook maar eens zo’n harpje aan te schaffen. Het vele oefenen deed hem uiteindelijk op diverse podia belanden. In 1993 krijgt Rob de kans om zich aan te sluiten bij de band van niemand minder dan Sam Lay, een drummer die ooit nog achter Muddy Waters, Little Walter en vele andere grootheden heeft plaats genomen. Rob grijpt deze kans met beide handen aan en verhuist naar Chicago. Na dit mooie avontuur besluit Rob samen met onder andere bassist Patrick Rynn en gitarist Chris James een eigen band ‘Rob Stone and the C-Notes’ te starten. In 1998 verschijnt hun eerste album ‘No Worries’. Platenmaatschappij Earwig biedt de band vervolgens een contract aan en in 2003 verschijnt op dit label het album ‘Just My Luck’. Nu, zeven jaar later, heeft de band zich opgesplitst en zijn er twee nieuwe cd’s uit. De eerste is van het duo Chris James & Patrick Rynn en heeft als titel ‘Gonna Boogie Anyhow’ meegekregen en de tweede is een soloproject van Rob Stone met de titel ‘Back Around Here’.
Op ‘Back Around Here’ spelen naast het duo Chris James & Patrick Rynn een aantal grote namen mee. Wat te denken van de drummers Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, Sam Lay en Willy Hayes en op piano Aaron Moore. Het album telt twaalf nummers waarvan er acht zelf zijn geschreven; ‘Love You For Myself‘/Sonny Boy Williamson, ‘Give Me Time’/Magic Sam, ‘It’s Hard But it’s Fair’/Lowman Pauling en ‘Sloppy Drunk Blues’/Leroy Carr zijn de covers.
De cd opent met de heerlijke shuffle ‘You’re No Good For Me’. Rob beschikt over een prettig stemgeluid en zijn harmonica klinkt heerlijk ‘vet’. En met Willie Hayes op de drums swingt het natuurlijk altijd net ietsje meer. In ‘Back Around Here’ duiken de ‘Horns’ (Rodney Brown op tenorsax en John Bowes op de baritonsax) voor de eerste keer op en laat gitarist Chris James zijn gitaar lekker scheuren.
Voor Sonny Boy’s ‘Love You For Myself’ gaat de mondharmonica microfoon eventjes de kast in en blaast Rob mooi akoestisch. Het prachtige pianospel van Aaron Moore maakt deze versie helemaal top. Rob’s nieuwe woonplaats Chicago krijgt een ode in ‘Chicago All Night’ met hierin een uitstekende sax solo van Rodney Brown. ‘Sloppy Drunk Blues’ van Leroy Carr is al heel wat keren gecoverd, maar de uitvoering hier is perfect te noemen; vooral het pianospel van dit keer David Maxwell is uitstekend. De Boogie-Woogie komt aan het einde van de cd aan bod in ‘Can’t Turn Back The Clock’, een nummer dat werkelijk de pan uit swingt.
Dit is nu weer eens een cd die elke bluesliefhebber in zijn hart zal sluiten. Prima Chicago – en Jump Blues!

Dit album bevat pure Chicago Blues. Rob Stone, Chris James en Patrick Rynn schreven de teksten. Met de opener ‘You’re No Good For Me’ voel je al direct aan dat dit een leuk schijfje wordt om met volle teugen van te genieten. Waarom Rob zeven jaar heeft gewacht om een opvolger te maken voor ‘Just My Luck’? de man was gewoon veel te druk bezig met optredens en kon geen tijd vrij maken om in de studio te duiken, tot nu dus.
Stone mag rekenen op een heleboel bekende namen om dit album tot een succes te maken. Zo gaven David Maxwell, Aaron Moore/piano, Willie Hayes, Sam Lay, Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith /drums en Patrick Rynn/bas en vele anderen hun medewerking. Wat ook bijdraagt is de variatie en verschillende invloeden op dit schijfje. Via gevoelige harp, die Stone hier voortreffelijk bespeelt, in ‘Love You For Myself’ over big band in ‘Chicago All Night’ tot boogie woogie in ‘Sloppy Drunk Blues’. Voor de Chicago Blues liefhebbers echt een hebbedingetje.
