Description

The Lobi Traore’s music could be the link between John Lee Hooker and Africa. Originating from Mali, as his mentor Ali Farka Toure, and born in 1963 at Bakarydjanla Farako (Segou), the force of Lobi Traoré lies in his skills for guitar and other traditional instruments, his knowledge of values and of the folklore of his rich region. Very short but squat as a Bambara wrestler, his style is simple but original. His melodies are close the Bambara tradition, but interpreted with this strange mix of sadness and energy which is the typically Lobi’s style, they help us to understand where the blues is comin’ from. « During my first festival Africolor, the journalists qualified my music as Blues, and as they found it authentic, they named it Bambara Blues » he explained. The instrumentation is quite versatile with the guitar, the Kora, the djembe, the n’goni and the calabash.

« Mali Blues » put together the best of the 4 albums that Lobi has released between 1991 and 1998 : « Bambara Blues" », « Bamako" », « Segou » and « Duga ». Ali Farka Touré has produced several songs of « Mali Blue » and plays guitar on some tracks.
