Grady Champion – Back In Mississippi – Live At The 930 Blues Cafe

In 1990 rapte deze artiest nog onder de naam Mc Gold. Hij maakte kennis met de blues en wat hiphop/blues fusion projecten verknipte hij zich later tot een 100 % bluesartiest. Deze cd is een heruitgave van een in 2008 verschenen cd op het GSM label. Earwig pikte in op het project nadat Grady Champion in januari 2010 winnaar was geworden van de 26st International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

Grady Champion, grew up on a farm in Canton, Mississippi. He released his debut album, Goin? Back Home in 1998, drawing ever-larger crowds to blues clubs around Florida and Mississippi before signing with Shanachie Records, for which he did two albums, in 1999 and 2001.
From the inception of his career as a blues performer, Champion has sought to tackle new lyrical themes with his original compositions. He is a charismatic performer, poised to bust out worldwide, with the international release on the Earwig Music label, of his cd Back in Mississippi Live.

In January 2010, Grady won the 26th International Blues Challenge beating out 110 bands from around the world. As a result, Grady has been booked on high profile festivals and events, including the Chicago Blues Festival, and the Ultimate Rhythm & Blues Cruise.

Grady Champion proves during this in-performance set of blues offerings that not only does classic material still stand the test of time, but new songs based on old-school precepts with a little updating also deliver the goods. Recorded live at the 930 Blues Cafe in Jackson, MS on July 7, 2007. Champion's revue-style program definitely works well, just like it did for others many decades prior. His harmonica playing certainly reflects past greats like Little Walter, while his singing is on the nasty, filthy sounding, rough and tough side, but it's not vulgar. Standardized themes and life's lessons learned are expressed by this group, featuring Eddie Cotton, Jr. playing guitar, brother Marquis Champion on bass and backup vocals, and with the excellent Calvin Wilson on keyboards. The band faithfully covers several well-known blues tunes like Willie Dixon's "Spoonful" and "I'm Ready," plays the occasional gospel-shaded tune (check out "1-800-Blu-Love"). They're best at stomp-down party band music on a Jimmy Reed medley, or Grady Champion and Eddie Cotton's original "Wine & Women," or the rockin' "You Got Some Explaining to Do," where they lay it all on the line and hold nothing back. While much of this is typical fare, the energy of the band is well above average, attributed to the full house present giving the group inspiration. It's well recorded and played, one of the better live barroom blues recordings in recent memory.

Tien jaar geleden maakte ik kennis met het schitterend album 'Payin For My Sins',- uitgebracht op Shanachie-, van de jonge singer-songwriter Grady Champion, bluesman uit Canton, Mississippi, die na een muzikale start als rapper zich uiteindelijk tot de blues wendde. Omdat hij behalve gitaar ook bluesharp wilde spelen, ging hij slapen met de muziek van Sonny Boy Williamson en liet deze de ganse nacht afdraaien. Na nog een tweede album bij Shanachie hoorde je nog weinig van hem, tot hij na wat omzwervingen en een tussenfase als Collegestudent muziekstudies, opnieuw opdook in bluesclubs of op cruise met harmonica en gitaar. Zijn stem klinkt inmiddels als een oude rot in de blues.
Op 7 juli 2007 trad hij op in 'The 930 Blues Cafe' in de Congress Street te Jackson, Mississippi. Het concert was op voorhand uitverkocht en samen met zijn band en gitarist Eddie Cotton Junior bracht hij daar een schitterende show, die je nu drie jaar later op dit schijfje kan beluisteren. Afgaande op de imaginaire uitslaande vlammen moet het een fantastische show geweest zijn. Hij begint met Willie Dixon's 'I'm Ready' om meer dan een uur later af te sluiten met zijn eigen 'Blues On Christmas', waarmee hij in 1998 nog een hit scoorde.
Zijn set was opgebouwd uit ongeveer de helft eigen nummers en de andere helft covers. Grady zingt zijn songs met een rauwe soulvolle stem, speelt harmonica als de beste en aarzelt geen seconde om emotioneel de diepste zielslagen aan te boren zoals in het verschroeiend passionele 'Lonesome Bedroom Blues'. Ook in zijn eigen 'Love And Memories', met mooie pianobegeleiding, bereikt hij eenzelfde intensiteit, zijn muziek besprenkelend met het wijwater van de geloofsblues.
De frontman wordt omringd met uitstekende muzikanten, waaronder toetsenist Calvin Wilson en zijn zoon Marquis Champion die bas speelt. Hij en zijn band werden trouwens in januari dit jaar nog als winnaar uitgeroepen tijdens de 26ste International Blues Challenge en ontvingen er in Memphis de KBA Award (Keep The Blues Alive).
Grady Champion, jongste van 28 kinderen, - naar men schrijft -, heeft ongetwijfeld reden genoeg om de blues te zingen en doet dat met onvoorwaardelijke overgave, zowel in de meer funky als in de tragere nummers. Met de bluesklassieker 'Spoonful', waarop Cotton Jr. hem grandioos begeleidt, lijkt hij zelfs boven zichzelf uit te stijgen. En al kan je tijdens een Live optreden ook visueel genieten, auditief is deze Live uitvoering zo sterk dat er niet veel verbeelding nodig is om je tussen het publiek te wanen.
