Reviews:

1. Flying shoes - Norman Darwen
This is the eighth studio album from this four-piece band out of Atlanta, Georgia, with nine original compositions and a throbbing cover of Mississippi Delta bluesman Son House’s classic ‘Death Letter’, more than a little different from other versions you may have heard. The band is more of a roots-rock outfit than a straight blues band, with an upbeat approach and an ability to consistently hit a seemingly effortless groove married to a memorable melody and catchy lyrics. Although the gospel based guitar instrumental ‘Cabbagetown Shuffle’ impresses mightily, a track like ‘Refugee’ probably doesn’t win them too many friends in the more conservative areas of the South.
The band’s sound is unusual in being based around the twin slide guitars and fine vocals of Tom Gray and Mark Johnson over a cooking rhythm section, occasionally aided by the deep vocals of bassist Franher Joseph. At 36 minutes, the running time may seem a little short, but when you have said all that is needed, there’s no need for more, is there?

Zoals hun label het formuleert: “Atlanta’s sultans of slide guitar; the blues and roots rock quartet Delta Moon return with their eighth studio album ‘Cabbagetown’, released March 17, 2017, on Jumping Jack Records. The follow-up to the award-winning 2015 release, ‘Low Down’, named one of the best blues records of the year by both Downbeat and Blues Music Magazine.  The new album features nine original compositions and a lively cover of Son House’s timeless classic, Death Letter. De meest nummers gaan over liefdesachtige zaken (Just Lucky I Guess, Coolest Fools, Mad About You). Volgens de band is het een “…autobiography of roots-rock dreams with a Springsteen like appeal”. Een donkerbruine mannenstem spreekt “In this whole wide world we got nowhere to be, so we keep walking, my family and me”. De vrouw voegt er aan toe: “It’s me, Ashja, I’ve come here on a boat, full of so many people, it could barely float. I’ve been raped and beaten….”.

Knap!

Delta Moon confirmed again and again. The slide guitar has the upper hand and goes perfectly with the acoustic strings, pounding drums and rough voice

This is the eighth album of blues and roots rock quartet Delta Moon. From Atlanta, Georgia, The Delta Moon went in 2016 to a successful tour around several European countries. After the tour they locked themselves in the recording studio to create this new album. Tom Gray and Mark Johnson met quite a long time ago in Atlanta, thanks to their passion for slide guitar. Both shared the same musical tastes and decided to form a band whose main trace was to include two slide guitar players, something not very usual but that has perfectly worked for them. The combination of two slide guitars gives them a distinctive, magical and very personal sound, where blues, country rock and folk perfectly combine in equal parts, always with an extremely subtle good taste. Tom Gray on vocals, lap steel, guitar, keyboards and harmonica, Mark Johnson on guitar, banjo and vocals, Franher Joseph on bass and vocals and Marlon Patton on drums form this original quartet which come to us with a very recommendable album, specially devoted to all lovers of the most contemporary blues displayed with elegance and poetry. VERY GOOD.
